Thomas Say & his contemporaries described species mainly of the Middle States, the Ohio & lower Missouri valleys, & a few from Florida. The first comprehensive treatment was that of Dr. Amos Binney, 1851-2, which included beautiful illus. & also Dr. Joseph Leidy’s pioneer anatomic observations. After that, William G. Binney & his collaborator Thomas Bland were the leading authorities up to nearly the end of the century; they published several vols. The catalogue of species & subspecies in this vol. contains only native species, those imported since settlement of the country by Europeans being omitted though they are included in the descriptive part.
