Description

Martin Avery Snyder (au)
Shelled mollusks are organisms important to the study of evolution, since upon death they leave behind a calcareous exoskeleton. Though molluscan fossils are sometimes nothing more than the molds formed by vanished specimens, most still bear the form of shells, often of extinct species. The most interesting problems that may be addressed through the study of fossils concern the adaptive development of various organisms over the vast span of geological time. The family Fasciolariidae is thought first to have appeared in the Cretaceous era, some 110 million years ago. Contents of this study: The family Fasciolariide; Genus-group taxa: introduction; List of genus-group taxa; Provisional arrangement of genus-group taxa; Genera removed from the family Fasciolariidae; Species-group taxa: introduction; List of species-group taxa; Abbreviated species list, by group: Introduction; Abbreviated species list; Bibliography; General references; & Reference for the family Fasciolariidae.
