Lisa E. Packer. This report presents the first results from the 1998 National Survey on Drug Abuse, an annual survey conducted by the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Admin. This survey has been the primary source of estimates of the prevalence & incidence of illicit drug, alcohol, & tobacco use in the population since 1971. The survey is based on a nationally representative sample of the civilian, non-institutionalized population of the U.S. age 12 years & older. A sample of 25,500 persons was interviewed for the 1998 survey; this sample included augmented samples in California & Arizona. Charts, tables & graphs.
