Electronic Banking: Experiences Reported by Banks in Implementing On-Line Banking

The growing accessibility of on-line banking services through computers with direct dial-up or Internet connections has led to heightened concerns about the vulnerability of bank & electronic payment systems. This report identifies (1) the number of banks & thrifts that reported they offer or plan to offer on-line banking & the types of services they reported, & (2) experiences reported by banks in implementing their on-line banking systems as well as efforts to mitigate associated risks. A survey was conducted of 349 banks in 1997; this information was used to project to the total population of U.S. banks with regard to on-line banking services.
