Description
Nicholas Zill. Nearly all children in the U.S. now attend kindergarten, but the population of children that comes to kindergarten is increasingly diverse & is characterized by different types of preschool experiences. This report examines the prevalence of selected accomplishments & difficulties in a national sample of 4,423 children from 3-5 years of age who had not yet started kindergarten. The study shows that attending Head Start, prekindergarten, or other center-based preschool programs is linked to higher emerging literacy scores in 4-year-olds, for children from both high-risk & low-risk family backgrounds.
