Spit Tobacco & Youth
James Bergman (ed). Describes the status of youth use of spit tobacco (snuff & chewing tobacco) in six areas: prevalence & patterns of use, health effects, environmental influences on use, product promotion & sales, regulation & enforcement, & educational efforts. Focuses on data developed after 1985 for users under the age of 19, & found spit tobacco use persists as a national health problem. Information came from four major sources: literature review, national & regional data on prevalence & use patterns, experts in spit tobacco issues, & young users. Found that 1 in 5 high school males used spit tobacco; age 11 or 12 is typical for starting use.
