Superfund: Stronger EPA-State Relationship Can Improve Cleanups & Reduce Costs
Steve Elstein (au). Under EPA’s regulations, states in which Superfund cleanup sites are located may participate in remedial actions within their boundaries, by cooperating with EPA on EPA-led projects or taking the lead on projects themselves. A growing consensus is emerging that states should take on more responsibility for leading the cleanup of the program’s highest priority sites. This report identifies lessons learned from the experiences of states that have already led cleanups & examines ways in which EPA can help ensure that states are successful in their efforts to adopt increased Superfund responsibilities.
