Military Attrition: DoD Could Save Millions by Better Screening Enlisted Personnel
Sharon Cekala, Elliott Smith, & Beverly Schladt. For the last decade, one-third of military enlistees have failed to complete their first tours of duty. This report reviews the attrition rates of first term, active-duty military personnel who are separated within the first six months of their enlistments. Calculates how much the services could save by achieving their goals for reducing six-month attrition; determines the adequacy of the data that DoD uses to allow it to establish realistic goals for reducing attrition; & identifies the principal reasons that enlistees are separated from the services while they are still in training.
