Great Lakes Regional Biomass Energy Program: Activities & Accomplishments
Jill K. Cliburn (ed). The Great Lakes region is poised to become a major producer of renewable Biomass energy fuels. The Great Lakes states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, & Wisconsin include much of the nationís richest cropland, as well as usable marginal land. Parts of the region also have abundant forests. In addition, the regionís urban area inevitably generate organic waste that can be converted to energy for homes & industry. By some estimates, the Great Lakes states could produce enough energy from biomass to serve about 20% of the current annual energy demand of the region, or about 4% of the total U.S. energy demand.
