Navy Carrier Battle Groups: The Structure & Affordability of the Future Force
Norman J. Rabkin, Richard J. Herley & Mark J. Wielgoszynski. The Navy’s Carrier Battle Groups (CBG) have traditionally supported the national defense strategy by providing overseas presence & a crisis response capability. This report discusses the policy, operational, & force structure aspects of CBG & provides possible alternatives for meeting national security requirements with fewer carriers. The Navy plans to reduce the force to 12 active carriers & an aviation training carrier by the end of FY 1995. The Navy intends to replace its conventional carriers with nuclear carriers on a one to one basis to maintain a 12 active carrier force.
