Supplemental Security Income: Social Security Administration is Taking Steps to Review Recipients’ Disability Status

Ineligible individuals may be receiving disability benefits under the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, which provides benefits to the low-income disabled & blind. Allegations of fraud, waste, & abuse in the program have been wide spread. Some ineligible non-English-speaking applicants were illegally obtaining benefits through the use of middlemen. There have also been sharp increases in the number of SSI recipients in recent years. From 1990 to 1996, the population of disabled SSI recipients increased by over 40%, from about 3.4 million to nearly 4.8 million. Tables.
