Description
Jagdish Rughani, Wayne St. John, John Diebel, Steve Shetron & Marty Jurgensen. A serious barrier to increased use of biomass fuels is the problem of ash disposal. The most cost effective way to dispose of wood ash (WA) is to apply it to the soil. WA acts as a fertilizer & buffer. Its use as a soil amendment avoids the problems created by landfill disposal. However, serious concerns have been posed by some state regulating agencies on the direct application of WA to soils. This report summarizes the regulatory status of WA disposal in the Great Lakes Region & the analytical tests required to permit land application of WA.
