In Our Own Image: Eugenics & the Genetic Modification of People
David Galton. Galton provides a clear-headed & sensible assessment of the history, science & ethics of eugenics. The subject was first debated by the Ancient Greeks, & was then developed in the late 19th century, with considerable support from Charles Darwin. Its scope has, however, increased enormously since the recent revolution in molecular genetics. Genetic databases can now be easily obtained for individuals either before or at birth, & are being constructed for entire populations; & genetic markers are being developed to see if human embryos possess deleterious genes predisposing the future adult to diseases such as cancer or diabetes. Such embryos can be discarded in favor of ones with ‘better’ genetic endowments -- ‘designer babies’. Illustrated.
