In the aftermath of the Oct. 2003 Firestorms, Southern California documented a total of 739,597 acres burned, 3,631 homes destroyed & 24 lives lost, including one firefighter. When San Diego’s county fires began on Oct. 25, 2004, they were initially left alone to fight the fires & protect lives & properties in their communities. The San Diego Regional Emergency Preparedness Task Force was established to identify how their community could better prepare & respond to all risk hazards that their region could be subjected to. The Task Force was chaired by Sheriff Bill Kolendar, San Diego County Sheriff’s Dept., & Fire Chief Jeff Bowman, San Diego Fire-Rescue Dept. Illustrations.
