Description
Douglas Holz-Eakin (pf). Recently, senior Navy officials have argued that the nation needs a larger Navy: 375 ships, including a surface combatant (SC) force of 160 ships. That force would comprise 104 large cruisers & destroyers as well as 56 new, much smaller vessels. Reaching the Navy’s new force goal by building more SC would require a substantial investment, which would compete with other demands, including different transformation efforts & ship programs. This study examines whether there are ways to transform the SC force within today’s funding level. Looks at the Navy’s modernization plans for the SC force & their budgetary implications. Also evaluates 3 options that would modernize & transform that force at the current funding level. Charts & tables.
