Description
Raul O’Ryan & Daniel Sperling (a); Eileen Claussen (fr). Worldwide, transportation sector (TS) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are the fastest growing & most difficult to control. In Chile, where the TS is growing faster than the rest of the econ. & accounts for 1/3 of the nation’s energy use, per capita GHG emissions are relatively high & car & truck ownership rates continue to increase. The environ. consequences of Chile’s rapid development have been a low priority for policymakers, but they are causing severe air pollution & traffic congestion. This report creates two scenarios of GHG emissions from Chile’s TS in 2020. It finds that introducing new & enhanced tech., improving public transport., & encouraging smaller cars & alternatives to car use, would decrease GHG emissions & have climate change benefits.
