Description
Hiroshi Kagami. Early in the morning of Sept. 30, 1993, an earthquake, later known as the Maharashtra earthquake, took place near the village of Killari in the State of Maharashtra, India. As many as 10,000 to 30,000 people were killed. The epicentral area was on the Deccan Plateau where the seismicity is believed to be very low. Although the magnitude of the event was not so large, 6.0-6.5 on the Richter scale, serious damage was inflicted because of the shallow focus event & vulnerable building stock in the region, at 4:00 AM local time when most people were sleeping. A team from the Ministry of Educ. of Japan sent a reconnaissance team to the affected area & compiled this report of what they saw in several villages. Color & B&W photos.
