PBX Vulnerability: Finding Holes in Your PBX Before Someone Else Does
D. Richard Kuhn. The Private Branch Exchange (PBX) is a sophisticated computer-based switch that can be thought of as essentially a small, in-house phone co. Protection of the PBX is a high priority, to prevent toll fraud, theft of proprietary or confidential info., & loss of revenue or legal entanglements. This report presents a generic methodology for conducting an analysis of a PBX in order to identify security vulnerabilities. It focuses on digital-based PBXs & addresses the following: system architecture; hardware; maintenance; admin. database/software; & user features. This is not a step-by-step process, but rather a guideline for what specific areas should be studied for possible vulnerabilities. This process must be customized for each specific PBX.
