Description
Penn Kemble (ed.). This UNICEF report alleges that slavery exists in Sudan & has been used by the gov’t. as a tool in fighting the country’s civil war (CW). The CW began in 1983 when rebels seeking autonomy for the largely animist & Christian south took up arms against the Muslim-dominated N. gov’t. after the adoption of Islamic law for the country. The report states “the pattern of slave-taking that has developed since the start of the CW is the product of a counterinsurgency strategy pursued by successive gov’ts. in Khartoum. The strategy involves arming militias from N. Sudan, who attack rebel-controlled villages & abduct & enslave Southern Sudanese. There are more than 100,000 Sudanese slaves.
