Description
Barry Leonard (ed.). Although the Russian Gov’t. (RG) generally respected the human rights of its citizens in some areas, serious problems remain in many areas, such as Chechnya. Despite the continued wide diversity of press in Russia, RG pressure on the media increased & resulted in numerous restrictions on the freedom of speech & press. The RG does not always respect the Constitutional provision for equality of religions & for citizens’ freedom of movement. Violence against women & abuse of children remained problems, as did discrim’n. against women, persons with disabilities, & ethnic minorities. Trafficking in persons, particularly women & young girls, was a serious problem.
