Evaluation of the Head Injury Hazard During Military Parachuting
Charles R. Paschal, Jr.. Addresses the problem of a large increase in the incidence of head injury during Army airborne training & airborne operations (ATAO). A number of factors are known to contribute to these head injuries, including the small amount of impact protection provided by the PASGT helmet, shortcomings in training procedures, & failure of trained airborne troops to follow proper procedures when jumping. With little modification, the impact protection of the airborne helmet can be significantly improved. Evaluates a number of factors present in ATAO that contribute to head injury & explains how training & operational procedures can be modified to reduce the incidence of serious head injuries.
