Window of Opportunity: The Concentrated Buying Power in Inner Cities
Frances D. Stanley. A report in response to a community development profile study of the Wash., DC area. The economies of older cities continue to decline. Yet despite low average incomes, high pop. density translates into a local market with substantial purchasing power. Reviews the work of Michael Porter, the Social Compact, & others, & applies their theories to 10 cities in MD, VA, WV, NC & SC. In Wash., DC, & Balt., MD, the two largest cities, leakage occurs in the aggregate, while in the other 8 cities studied, such circumstances as annexation & tourism account for the cities’ capturing buying power in the aggregate. The report concludes that purchasing power in the study areas remains untapped.
