Foreign Affairs: Status of U.S. Parental Child Abductions to Germany, Switzerland, & Austria
John Brummet. About 1,000 children are abducted by one of their parents from the U.S. annually. Pursuant to the 1980 Hague Conv. on the Civil Aspects of Internat. Child Abduction, left-behind parents can apply for the return of, or access to (visitation) their children located in the countries that are parties to the Convention with the foreign country’s gov’t. The Convention governs how these applications are handled & adjudicated in the foreign country where the child is located. Several countries, including Germany, Austria, & Sweden, have not met their commitments under this Convention. This report includes info. on the outcome of cases initiated by parents left behind in the U.S. from Jan. ‘95-May ‘00.
