Description

Sridhar Susaria. Perchlorate has contaminated surface water & groundwater at various locations in the U.S. This compound has an influence on thyroid gland function. As a potential endocrine disrupter, perchlorate can threaten the health of both humans & wildlife. Technologies commonly used to remove contaminants from ground & surface water either are ineffective for remediation of perchlorate or too expensive for large-scale use. This was the first test to evaluate the ability of vascular plants (VP) to remove perchlorate from solution at field concentrations & transform this contaminant into an innocuous end product. The results suggest that VP provide a rapid, inexpensive option for remediation.
