Moving Toward More Effective Public Internet Access: The 1998 National Survey of Public Library Outlet Internet Connectivity
Jeanne Hurley Simon (ed). This survey is based on a sample of 2,500 of the nationís 15,718 public libraries. It concludes that public Internet access has increased, & that the progress is substantial. Nevertheless, the survey identified significant gaps that are of concern. It raises questions about unequal distribution of Internet access among libraries serving rural, suburban & urban populations. It also addresses for the first time the concept of effective public Internet access, including access to the World Wide Web on workstations with sufficient capability & at 56 kbps or greater, as well as having a sufficient number of workstations for the population to be served.
