In 1997 a sample of l2,349 people throughout the U.S. was asked questions concerning (a) their attendance at live arts events, (b) their participation in the arts through broadcast & recorded media, & (c) their personal performance or creation of art. The response: half of the U.S. adult population attended at least one of 7 arts activities (jazz, classical music, opera, musical plays, non-musical plays, ballet, or art museums) during the previous 12 months. The survey also asked questions about their participation in the arts through broadcast & recorded media. Data was also collected on the respondent’s age, gender, race, educ., & household income.
