The award is administered by the Baldrige National Quality Program of the Nat. Inst. of Standards & Technology (NIST). This award is responsible for making quality a national priority & disseminating best practice across the U.S. NIST promotes economic growth by working with industry to develop & apply technology, measurements & standards through various partnerships. The 1999 appropriation for the Baldrige National Quality Program was $4.9 million, which included $1.9 million for the new award categories for education & healthcare, which were added in 1997.
