Description
Mark Yashinsky (au); Pat Hipley (au); Quang Nguyen (au). After the 1971 San Fernando Earthquake, the Calif. Transit System began its 1st seismic retrofit program, under which approx. 1400 bridges out of a state inventory of 12,000 bridges were retrofitted. The retrofits were designed to prevent bridge superstructures from falling off their supports. Damage from the Loma Prieta Earthquake on Oct. 17, 1989 provided the pressure to undertake a 2nd seismic retrofit program. While this 2nd program was underway, the Jan. 17 1994 Northridge Earthquake occurred & as a result, a 3rd screening of bridges was done, & an additional 1,364 bridges were identified for retrofit at an additional cost of $1,050 million.
