Minutes and Correspondence of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 18121924: Microfilm Publications Guide
Our Price: $25.00

Venia T. Phillips (ed); Maurice E. Phillips (ed)
Ever since its foundation in 1812, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia has preserved manuscript documents even after the information has been published. The secretaries, curators, librarians, councillors, committeemen, editors & other officers of the Academy had all cached such papers somewhere for posterity. These holdings were largely brought together by Edward J. Nolan for his history to celebrate the hundredth anniversary. He had hoped to have his long history published & presented as a memorial at that time. When funds were not available for printing, the “Short History” listed in the bibliography was used instead. The ms. text of the long history is still reposing in its bier in the library vault. The materials published here in microfilm form have always been locked away in the Academy’s hall & always remained in the technical custody of the librarian.

Jefferson’s Botanists: Lewis & Clark Discover the Plants of the West
Jefferson’s Botanists: Lewis and Clark Discover the Plants of the West
Our Price: $20.00

Richard McCourt (au); Earle Spamer (au)
This beautiful concise book discusses how Meriwether Lewis collected plant specimens on the journey of exploration that he & William Clark led across the American West to the Pacific Ocean & back, sent by Pres. Thomas Jefferson. It includes facsimile excerpts from their original journals. The task of plant collecting was Lewis’s military duty, but he seems to have had a real flair for collecting & describing the specimens. It is clear that he spent long hours observing the specimens, perhaps with a magnifying glass, cross-checking the anatomy of the plant before him with an illustrated ed. of Linnaeus’s botany book. The hundreds of Lewis & Clark specimens that survive today, known as the Lewis & Clark Herbarium, are stored in protective folders in special storage cabinets, in a climate controlled room at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. Visiting scholars can readily retrieve & study the plants. Illus.

All in the Bones
All in the Bones: A Biography of Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins
Our Price: $45.00

Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins (1807-1894) was a British artist and naturalist who significantly changed the way society thought about the world and its pre-human inhabitants. As one of the most versatile and prolific natural history artists of the Victorian age, Hawkins played a central role in the popularization of 19th century science. His knowledge of comparative anatomy and versatility at painting enabled him to create beautiful and scientifically accurate illustrations of fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, insects, and fossils for such important figures as Richard Owen, Charles Darwin, and Thomas Henry Huxley early in his career. Hawkins went on to make the first life-sized reconstructions of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures anywhere in the world. Through a series of public displays in Great Britain and the U.S., Hawkins almost single-handedly ignited a popular interest in dinosaurs that continues to the present day. This is the first full-length biography of Waterhouse Hawkins. It is based on years of meticulous research in libraries, archives and museums in England and the U.S., including family papers, letters, sketch books and private records never available to scholars before. Includes a detailed time-line of Hawkins’ professional career. Illus.
