Reprint of an article originally pub. in “Antiquarian Horology,” Dec. 2006 discussing scientific titles in the Lib. Co. of Phila. (LCP) that influenced early Amer. clockmakers, such as David Rittenhouse & Edward Duffield. In 1792 the Library received the nearly 4,000 vol. Loganian Library, which included the private library of James Logan. Another LCP shareholder involved with clocks was cabinetmaker Benjamin Randolph. The greatest enhancement to the horological collections came during the tenure of librarian Edwin Wolf 2nd. Also discusses clocks held by the LCP: the ‘Cromwell Family Clock’ by John Fromanteel; the ‘Astronomical Clock’ by John Child; the ‘William Penn Clock’ by William Martin; & clocks by Christopher Sauer, & Edward Duffield.
