Year of the Comets: A Journey from Sadness to the Stars
Jan DeBlieu (au)
In the spring of 1996, the comet Hyakutake appeared. Also that spring, Jan DeBlieuís husband began a long slide into clinical depression. One night, DeBlieu stepped outside and found herself staring at the great comet, an encounter that created an intense desire to learn about space. DeBlieu immersed herself in the study of the stars and the study of the human brain. DeBlieu weaves these findings into descriptions of what she was able to see of the stars from her backyard. The study of brain science is nowhere near as advanced, a source a great frustration to patients suffering from mental illness. DeBlieu describes the painful process of watching her husband suffer and the joy of his slow healing. In the end it became their healing as a couple.
