Voodoo: Mounted by the Gods
Alberto Venzago (au) (ph); Wim Wenders (in)
Hardcover (no d.j.)
Contains 125 black-&-white photos by Venzago, who made the film about voodoo, “Mounted by the Gods.” In April 1988, Venzago decided to cross the African continent on a motorbike. After many breakdowns, in the town of Ouidah in Benin, his bike gave up. He photographed a graffiti covered wall where he came to a standstill, & learned that a famous voodoo monastery lies behind it. Mahounon, who presided over this monastery, was one of the most influential priests in W. Africa. Venzago became friends with him, & began filming ceremonies & rituals that no one had ever documented before. Mahounon died, & was replaced by Gounon, who at age 17 became recognized by all the powerful voodoo masters in Benin. The book recounts these stories.
