In 1995, the USPHS/IDSA developed guidelines for preventing opportunistic infections in persons infected with HIV. These guidelines, written for healthcare providers & patients, were revised in 1997 & again in 1999. For each of the 19 diseases covered in this report, specific recommendations are provided that address: (a) prevention of exposure to the opportunistic pathogen; (b) prevention of the first episode of disease; & (c) prevention of disease recurrence.
