Research-Practice Partners Assess Their First Joint Project: A Reprint from “Science and Practice Perspectives”
Suzanne L. Wenzel (au)
Two investigators joined forces to test an intervention to improve services for patients with co-occurring mental disorders. The researchers’ applied theoretical understanding & the counselors’ intimacy with patient responses combined to strengthen the intervention. However, counselors’ discomfort with some protocols & changes reflecting the dynamic nature of the community-based research setting complicated the study execution & interpretation. The intervention improved the counselors’ ability to identify & respond appropriately to patients’ co-occurring disorders. The experience also demonstrated the advisability of consulting collaboratively with clinic staff during the planning of studies & the pre-testing of study protocols. Chart.
