Over 80 tsunamis have been observed or recorded along the coast of Calif. in the past 150 years, 9 causing minor damage in ports & harbors & 2 with major impacts. On Sun., Dec. 26, 2004, a strong earthquake of magnitude 9.3 occurred off the coast of northern Sumatra, triggering a giant tsunami that propagated throughout the Indian Ocean Basin, causing massive casualties & destruct. As a result, the Calif. Seismic Safety Comm. created a Tsunami Safety Comm. to evaluate the state of tsunami readiness in Calif. This Comm. held 6 meet. & took testimony from local gov’ts. & the scientific community. Here are their Findings & Recommend.
