The “Transactions” of the American Philosophical Soc. (APS) held at Philadelphia for Promoting Useful Knowledge, the oldest scholarly journal published in America with a continuous history, was established in 1769. The first vol. was completed in 1771; a second ed. was printed in 1789. By 1809 six vols. were issued in this series, which is known as the Old Series and is referred to in the index by the abbreviation “o.s.” after the vol. number. In 1818 a new series of the “Transactions” was started and this has been continued to the present, Vol. 50 appearing in 1960. Currently one vol. consisting of several parts is issued each year. Unless otherwise indicated, items in the index refer to this series. Up to and including Vol. 47, with the exception of Vol. 24, continuous pagination is used throughout the vol.; therefore, the page number as well as the part number is given. Beginning with Vol. 48, and also in Vol. 24, separate pagination is used for each part.
