Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of 4-Methylimidazole (CAS No. 822-36-6) in F344/N Rats and B63F1 Mice (Feed Studies)
P. C. Chan (ed)
4-methylimidazole (4-M) is an ingredient in a variety of chemical products including pharmaceuticals, photographic chemicals, dyes & pigments, & rubber. The effects of 4-M on male & female rats & mice were studied to identify potential toxic or carcinogenic hazards to humans. Survival by animals exposed to 4-M was the same as for the controls, but animals exposed to the higher concentrations weighed less than the controls. Female rats receiving 4-M had a slightly higher rate of leukemia than the controls. Male & female mice had increased rates of adenomas & carcinomas of the lung. The study concludes that 4-M caused lung cancer in male & female mice. It may also have been associated with development of leukemia in female rats. Illus.
