This research effort on privatization of prisons adds both to the work of Geis (1986) & to the Nat. Institute of Justice (NIJ) study (1985). Like the NIJ study, it assesses the relative interest of policymakers in privatization. Rather than using state level officials, however, a nat. census of prison warden & superintendent attitudes was compiled. However, unlike the NIJ study, perspectives on all of the three major areas of privatization were measured rather than just focusing on prison industries. Further, Geis’ assessment of the relative political viability of each of these three types of involvement was evaluated from a practitioner’s perspective. Finally, the attitudinal & demographic characteristics that drive the formation of such perceptions in the policymaker were also assessed in the current work. Tables.
