High Performance Work Practices and Firm Performance
Barry Leonard (ed)
This document surveys research on the effectiveness of “high performance work practices,” which are designed to provide employees with skills, incentives, information, and decision-making responsibility that improve business performance and facilitate innovation. The evidence indicates that high performance practices are usually associated with increases in firm productivity. These productivity effects are most pronounced when such work practices are implemented together as a system. The research also suggests that high performance work practices are positively associated with a firm’s long-term financial performance. Includes selected research summaries.
