President’s House in Philadelphia
President’s House in Philadelphia: A Special Issue of “The Pennsylvania Magazine of History & Biography”
Our Price: $20.00

In Jan. 2002, an article was pub. by Edward Lawler Jr. on the Pres. House in Phila., the executive mansion of the U.S. from 1790 to 1800. Lawler presented historical evidence in defense of his conjectural floor plan of the house. The article caused great controversy with the revelation that as visitors approached what would be the new Liberty Bell Center they would cross over the area where George Washington’s slaves had once lived. After much debate, it has been decided that slavery would be interpreted on this site -- but how will the stories be told? The articles in this issue both revisit & push forward the discussion. Authors: Edward Lawler Jr.; Damie Stillman; Dennis J. Pogue; Doris Devine Fanelli; Michael Coard; & Sharon Ann Holt. Illus.
Jacob Eichholtz 1776-1842
Jacob Eichholtz 1776-1842: Portrait Painter of Pennsylvania
Our Price: $30.00

This volume on the works of  Eichholtz aims to fill one of the missing links in the growing history of American portrait painting of the early 19th century. At first a coppersmith, the artist became a well-known portrait painter of his day. Although his painting career began & ended in Lancaster, Eichholtz lived for 10 years in Phila., exhibiting regularly at the Penna. Academy of the Fine Arts. He knew Thomas Sully & Gilbert Stuart, but basically he was self-taught. A major portion of these paintings is still in private ownership, but the artist is well represented in museum collections. This volume includes more than 200 illustrations, covering the range of the artist’s growth & styles of paintings, includes miscellaneous subjects other than portraits.
