Conserving Old Forest in Landscapes Shaped by Fire
Valerie Repp (au) (ed)
The Forest Service Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP) provides policy direction for fed. land within the range of the northern spotted owl in California, Oregon, and Wash. In a recent review of the Planís first 10 years, fed. agencies looked at the status and trends for late-successional and old forests (LSOF) in the Plan area. The amount of LSOF currently susceptible to high-severity wildfire is of increasing concern. Within the NWFP area, 1.7 mill. acres of mature and old forest are in dry, fire-prone forests, incl. the Klamath Mountains, SW Oregon, and eastern slopes of the Cascade Range. Research suggests that an understanding of disturbance dynamics over large landscapes is vital to conserving functional LSOF networks in landscapes shaped by fire. Illus.
