Studies of Evolution in the Genus Spirifer: Publications of the Wagner Free Institute of Science, Volume II
Carroll Lane Fenton (au); Rudolf Ruedemann (fr)
Although fossils offer an inviting field for the study of the methods and laws of evolution, as they allow the actual observation of successive generations through long stretches of time, (as of 1931) this field has hitherto been but little worked and has been largely neglected in the Invertebrates. This author has studied thousands of shells from successive beds in their minute structural details with a view to establishing their modes of alteration. Chapters: (1) Objects, Materials, Methods; (2) Taxonomy and Nomenclature; (3) Evolution versus Fluctuation; (4) Evolutionary Trends; (5) Rejected Theories and Hypotheses; (6) A Physiologic Theory of Racial Senescence. Also: The Spirifer orestes” Phratry; and The “Spirifer hungerfordi” Gens. Illus.
