Description

Studies associations between long term cumulative ambient concentrations of air pollutants in a cohort of 6,350 non-smoking California Seventh-day Adventists. Average annual mean concentrations as well as hours in excess of different thresholds were estimated for each of total suspended particulates (TSP), ozone, and sulfur dioxide (SO2) using monthly interpolations from monitoring stations to zip code centroids from 1967 to 1987. Incidence of the following chronic diseases was ascertained: cancer, definite myocardial infarction (M.I.) (1977-1982); cumulative incidence of definite symptoms of airway obstructive disease, chronic bronchitis, and asthma (1977-1982). All natural causes of mortality (1977-1986) were also ascertained.
