Description
The Stephen Girard Collection, which covers decorative arts from 1780-1820, is significant for several reasons. The items were owned by Girard, who was one of the wealthiest and most influential men of the period, and they are an unusually complete record of household furnishings reflecting a variety of styles and periods. An inventory made by in 1832 following Girard’s death has been very helpful in identifying many of the pieces. The furnishings were stored in Girard’s old bank building in Phila. until Girard College was opened in 1848. Girard kept thousands of pages of letters and other records representing his business, political and social life which are of incalculable importance to the explanation and understanding of the collection. Illustrations.
