Description
Return to the “Stetson hat era” of the U.S. Forest Service, when a ranger’s gear never failed to include a Stetson & his survival depended as much upon his horse’s mood as on watching for a change in the weather. The author was a Forest Service ranger in Montana from 1911 until retirement in 1947. He witnessed the inventions of gear such as the backpack, & of techniques that included smokejumping. He entertained & educated thousands of people about the beauties of their public wilderness lands. He shot b&w photos of remote places; some are included here. His memoirs describe companions on the trail & those met in small towns & on homesteads, co-workers & CCC members, & even Italian prisoners of war incarcerated in Montana during WW2.
