Sassoon was born in 1886 into a comfortable household in Kent, England, & began writing poetry as a boy. While a young officer, he confronted the terrible realities of WW1 on the battlefield, in verse, & finally, in 1917, announced his opposition to the war. By 1918 Sassoon found himself one of the most famous writers of the time, a mentor to Wilfred Owen & admired by Winston Churchill & T.E. Lawrence. Sassoon joined the Labour Party & became literary editor of the “Daily Herald”. He had a love affair with Stephen Tennent, but then married Hester Gatty & retreated to a quiet country life until their  estrangement & his subsequent conversion to Catholicism. This definitive biography brilliantly illuminates his life & his unequaled body of work. Photos.
