Reference Checking in Federal Hiring: Making the Call
Neil A. G. McPhie (ed)
It is crucially important that the Fed Govíts. employ. selection procedures identify the most qualified & highly committed employees. Properly conducted reference checks (RC) are a key component of a hiring process that will select the best employees. This report reviews the use of RC in public & private sectors, & identifies best practices. There is currently little standardization of Fed. RC, & little training offered in how to conduct this process effectively. There are legal protections for Fed. employers who make RC inquiries & for former employers who provide job-related info. about applicants. It is recommended that agencies improve the quality of their RC practices & check applicant references before making each hiring decision.
