Central counterparties (CCPs) are structures that help facilitate the clearing & settlement process in financial markets. Typical examples of CCPs in the U.S. include: the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Clearing House, the Options Clearing Corp., & the Clearing Corp. Examples in the EU include LCH.Clearnet & Eurex Clearing.  The Fed. Reserve Bank of Chicago & the European Central Bank sponsored a joint conf. on “Issues Related to Central Counterparty Clearing”. The conf. featured a multidisciplinary “law & economics” discussion of key legal, risk-mgmt., & public policy issues assoc. with CCPs, with a special emphasis on issues that arise in cross-border & cross-product transactions. This report provides an overview of the conference.
