This article discusses the problem that law enforcement fatigue & sleep deprivation are bcoming serious political & legal liabilities for police managers. Exhaustion due to shift work, voluntary & mandatory overtime assignments, seemingly endless hours waiting to testify in court, physical & emotional demands of dealing with the public, & management expectations of doing more with less, combined with family responsibilities, puts the modern law enforcement professional at serious emotional & physical risk. The cumulative work hours for many professionals are standardized & regulated through fed. or state regulatory commissions. Unfortunately, no such regulations exist for the majority of fed., state, & local law enforcement employees. This article discusses the accident risk, reduced social time, & health consequences, & makes recommendations for law enforcement agencies to make a concerted effort to provide a strong & coherent research base for the development of sound policies. Agencies should develop preventative strartegies to implement within the diverse range of political, economic, & social environments in which the law enforcement community functions & ensure cooperation with fed., state, & local court systems.
