Soon after Galileo was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Padua in 1592, he began to give private instruction in certain subjects not covered by the official curriculum. Among the first of those courses to be offered was one on military architecture and fortification. Galileo’s “geometric and military compass” grew out of that activity and became the subject of his first acknowledged printed book.
